Ruston Kelly has announced the upcoming release of his new five-track covers EP, Dirt Emo, Vol. 2, on March 14th. The collection will include his rendition of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” featuring fellow Nashville musician Annie DiRusso, as well as his cover of Morgan Wallen’s chart-topping 2021 hit, “Sand in My Boots.” Kelly, who was married to country superstar Kacey Musgraves from 2017-2020, describes the EP as expanding the concept of “dirt emo” to include songs that he describes as being “emo-adjacent.” “‘Dirt emo’ doesn’t have to be a specific genre, but more a mood or style in which I perform/reinterpret a song,” Kelly said in a statement. “It’s like angsty tumbleweeds or weeping holding a banjo.” Kelly will celebrate his upcoming release with “Dirt Emo Nights” at Nashville’s The Basement East on March 10th and 11th.
