Jelly Roll is still on his Beautifully Broken Tour, and recently he jumped onstage and surprised one of his openers, Alexandra Kay. It was right after her set, and she was about to leave, when Jelly showed up with nothing but nice things to say about her. He said, “Before she leaves the stage, I want to tell y’all a little bit about this young woman . . . in our business she does it, what we call, ‘completely independently’. “Which means she has no record label. She has no financier . . . It’s her and her best friend Beth, and they’re doing this completely by themselves. She has worked her [butt] off to get on this tour. My wife’s a fan, I’m a fan, my daughter’s a fan.” And then he closed it out by saying, “Support independent music. But as a girl-dad, more importantly, support independent women.” Good job for Jelly for speaking up as a girl-dad . . . and good job to Alexandra for getting on one of the biggest tours in the world, without any support from the music industry.
Vince Gill plays with the Eagles now and they have a residency at The Sphere, but he doesn’t think that playing there is all it’s cracked up to be. He said, “It’s the most people I’ve ever been ignored by. You’re playing, and they’re looking at all the stuff on the ceiling. They’re not paying attention to you. Music, to me, has never been visual . . . A great show, to me, is watching Merle Haggard stand there singing me great song, after great song. That’s still what I want to hear when I go hear music. I don’t necessarily want to see it.”He’ll be playing with the Eagles there through March.
